Riyadh  : The Northern Trail journey extends beyond natural and historical sites to explore the rich depths of local culture, notably through the art form of Samri. This musical tradition in Qassim and Hail embodies the region’s cultural diversity and shared spirit, gaining special momentum during the Saudi winter, coinciding with the tour of His Excellency the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Ahmed Al-Khatib.

In Qassim, the Samri features a relatively calm rhythm, characterized by collective voices and lyrics that resonate with everyday life. It is the soundtrack of gatherings and family evenings, where melodies intertwine with laughter and storytelling, reflecting the simplicity and contemplative nature of the agricultural society. Typically performed at social events, this art form enhances the cultural experience for visitors at farms and heritage festivals.

Contrastingly, the Samri in Hail presents a more vibrant and rhythmic character, infused with the spirit of the mountainous landscape and Bedouin traditions. Hail’s version boasts a faster tempo, becoming prominent at public events and larger gatherings. This energetic performance reflects Hail’s deep connection to horsemanship, folk tales, and legends, and is a staple at cultural evenings, nighttime festivities, and the unique hospitality experiences that define the region.

Despite the stylistic differences, both the Samri of Qassim and Hail share a core essence: they express joy, belonging, and collective memory. This offers visitors a profound insight into local culture, making it a lived experience rather than just a spectacle.

This cultural tapestry is central to the Northern Trail’s vision, linking visitors to the artistic and human heritage of each area. It underscores that winter in Saudi Arabia is a time for discovering folk traditions and celebrating culture in all its diversity—from the Samri rhythm of Qassim to its distinctive echoes in Hail. The Saudi Tourism Authority recently launched the “Saudi Winter” program under the slogan “Winter Live” in key destinations such as Riyadh, Diriyah, Jeddah, Al-Ula, the Red Sea, and the Eastern Province, along with distinctive spots like Qassim, Hail, and Madinah. An “exceptional events schedule” has also been released, detailing prominent tourist seasons and unique activities available through the “Spirit of Saudi Arabia” platform.
