Riyadh:
During the conference most of the speakers confirmed that obesity is the most important reason for the occurrence of all kinds of “hernias” in patients, and that it reduces the chances of success of the various surgical interventions for hernia, as well the proper nutrition plays important role in minimizing the incidence and complications of it.
Dr. Ashraf Maghrabi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Society of General Surgery, explained that during the conference there are many recent studies in all countries of the world and in the Kingdom were highlighted to cover the modern methods for treating hernias and reducing the rates of complications, including the use of modern surgical meshes and the latest techniques that can enhance the treatment of hernias and advance the surgical interventions such as laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.
The President of the Saudi Society for General Surgery called on patients suffering from hernia disease of any kind to be examined and assessed by a surgeon or a specialist doctor, because leaving the hernia for long time may result in an increase in the size of the hernia or the occurrence of complications, which reduces the chances of proper treatment and the recurrence of the hernia after the surgical intervention.
Regarding the conference, Dr. Maghraby stated that the number of those registered in the conference exceeded 300 surgeons specialized in treating hernia diseases in the Kingdom and the Arab countries, and that the conference program discussed many important axes such as treatment methods and the methods of performing surgeries through laparoscopes and robots, which were tackled by more than 12 renowned key opinion leaders from the field of Surgery, in addition to the medical discussion from the engagement of more than 300 health practitioners from all health sectors who attended the conference .
The recommendations that will come out of this meeting, Dr.Maghrabi stressed that the conference unanimously proofed that holding such conferences is very crucial for the medical education and sharing experiences between the specialists and highlighting the modern technologies in this field. In addition to the participation of numerous researchers in all types of hernias, which contributes to the development of the surgical interventions to treat such a common surgical problem that impacting the Saudi hernia patient is suffering from.
For his part, the honorary president of the conference, Vice-President of the European Foregut Society, Professor Sebastian Schoppman, confirmed that the conference held in the Kingdom is very important in view of the topics that will be discussed by experienced speakers. Professor Schoppman said that the conference was the largest of its kind in terms of comprehensiveness for hernia patients, in addition to learning about the latest methodolgies of treating hernia disease, and contributing in developing the surgical skills of the audience by transferring the international experiences of dealing with hernia patients, which will develop the level of healthcare service provided to the hernia patients in the Kingdom.
