– Second edition of Saudi Arabia’s prestigious camel racing competition runs until Saturday.
AlUla, Saudi Arabia-: Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar all saw winners on the second day of this year’s AlUla Camel Cup.
The second edition of the competition, organised by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) as part of the AlUla Moments calendar, in partnership with the Saudi Camel Racing Federation (SCRF), saw a dramatic day of racing on Thursday.
There were two categories of racing – the 5km Hagayeg and 5km Lagaya – with each category consisting of two races, and the total prize pool for the day amounting to SAR25.6 million. The prize pool was split SAR12.8 million between each of the Hagayeg and Lagaya categories.
In the first Hagayeg race, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of the Interior Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif triumphed thanks to a victory for his camel named AlUla with a time of 5:59.318 minutes.
In the second Hagayeg race of the day, Shart, owned by Emirati Mohammed Al Kutbi, claimed first place with a time of 5:57.843.
The first Lagaya race was won by Alsayeha, owned by the Emirati stable Hijin Zabeel, with a time of 7:52.343.
Nayed, owned by Qatari stable Hijin Alshahaneyah, won the second Lagaya in 7:49.888.
First place in each race received SAR3.25 million, while second earned SAR1 million and third SAR500,000.
The AlUla Camel Cup, which runs until Saturday, provides a mix of sport, culture, heritage, tradition, and more, and evolves a beloved sporting tradition that has thrived in Saudi Arabia since the 7th century.
