DCCPFT meets with representatives of key sectors during the Holy Month

Inspection tours educate traders and consumers about their respective rights and responsibilities

Dubai, United Arab Emirates-: Dubai Corporation for Consumer Protection and Fair Trade (DCCPFT), a part of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), has initiated a series of inspection tours, awareness campaigns and meetings with market traders and consumers ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan. The efforts aim to ensure that markets are ready to meet the expected rise in demand, and are also adhering to regulated prices during this period of the year. Additionally, the visits and awareness campaigns aim to educate traders and consumers about their respective rights and responsibilities.

Throughout the Holy Month, the ongoing tours and meetings prioritise a regulated trader-consumer relationship. The objective is to ensure companies and stores are well prepared to address consumer concerns and resolve any issues before reaching the Consumer Protection Department. This proactive approach aims to enhance consumer confidence in the markets.

Furthermore, DCCPFT plans to host meetings with sector-specific representatives during Ramadan, engaging consumer cooperatives, hypermarkets, tailor shops, women salons, e-commerce platforms and other retail outlets and online channels.

During these meetings, traders are urged to comply with consumer protection standards and adhere to business licences and permits issued by DCCPFT, with the sessions carefully assessing the readiness of businesses and stores for the Holy Month. Emphasis is placed on the significance of prominently displaying the consumer protection number (Tent Card), transparently showcasing prices of goods and services, ensuring price consistency between offers and checkout counters, and adhering to promotional offers which have been announced.

Mohammed Shael Alsaadi, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Consumer Protection and Fair Trade (DCCPFT), said: “We are committed to educating both consumers and traders to safeguard the rights of all parties, particularly during this special time of increased economic activity in the markets. This initiative aligns seamlessly with DET’s strategic vision and the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, focusing on executing awareness campaigns that inform traders and consumers about their rights and responsibilities, promoting fair competition, and fostering an environment conducive to equitable trade.”

Alsaadi underscored the importance of Dubai’s bustling markets, which draw both domestic and international shoppers, highlighting the strong reputation and consumer confidence attributed to them, owing to heightened awareness of fair practices and diligent efforts to uphold them. Such endeavours further consolidate Dubai’s position as one of the top three global cities for business and leisure, and the best city to visit, live and work in, he explained.

Ahmad Ali Moussa, Director of Consumer Protection Department, added: “As part of our ongoing initiatives, DCCPFT has been actively conducting on-site visits across various Dubai markets since last month. Our team has engaged in constructive meetings with traders, urging strict adherence to regulated prices during the Holy Month of Ramadan. These sessions also underscore the significance of offering receipts to consumers and educating them about their rights. We are committed to providing information on the available avenues for addressing any concerns or difficulties encountered with store owners and guiding them on the complaint filing process.”

During the recent period, field tours covered the Waterfront Market in Deira, the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Al Warsan, Al Ras Wholesale Market, Carrefour Mall of the Emirates, Union Coop Supermarket Chain in Al Warqa City Mall, and Abaya Mall, with plans to conduct more tours during the coming period and during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
