This year, Zurich landmark the Dolder Grand is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The illustrious, five-star City Resort nestled in the hills above Zurich has reinvented itself many times over the years. Today, it sits at the pinnacle of the hospitality industry, bringing its rich heritage to life through a contemporary and inspiring vision.
From Spa House to City Resort
When the Dolder Grand opened its doors on 10 May 1899, it initially served as a luxurious health spa that offered city residents access to relaxation and wellness in an idyllic setting. Its role as a pioneer and innovator within the industry, always in line with the times, was evident even then. It boasted a billiards room, two lifts and even the first modern means of communication, the telephone and telegraph. 125 years later, the hotel’s unmistakable architecture and inspiring legacy make it an icon in Zurich.
Between 2004 and 2008, the Dolder underwent extensive renovations, led by legendary architect Lord Norman Foster. The historic main building was restored to its original state and two contemporary wings were added in a trailblazing act of design – uniting the hotel’s rich past with modern-day, cutting-edge architecture and art. At the same time, it marked the turning point in the history of the Dolder Grand, its transformation from historic Grand Hotel to modern City Resort.
Illustrious Guest Book
Over the past 125 years, Royals, Rock Stars, Oscar Winners, Fashion Moguls and Global Leaders have called the Dolder Grand “home”. From Diane Kruger, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rebel Wilson, to King Charles, the Shah of Persia and Nelson Mandela, Karl Lagerfeld and Jimmy Choo. The Dolder shares such a relationship with the Rolling Stones, that as homage to the “Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World”, there is a suite dedicated to them: the unconventional and extravagant Suite 100.
Gastronomic Hotspot and Wellness Oasis
Its elevated gastronomy concept and annual gourmet festival make the Dolder Grand a bona fide foodie destination. Its five restaurants command a total of 64 GaultMillau points between them and are a true reflection of culinary excellence, brought to life by Culinary Director and world-class chef Heiko Nieder. Among the eateries is Zurich’s most highly awarded restaurant, The Restaurant, holder of two Michelin stars, which is led Nieder himself. Being named Hotel of the Year by GaultMillau in 2024 (and 2016) is recognition of the innovative spirit of the Dolder’s culinary philosophy.
The Spa at the Dolder Grand also enjoys an excellent reputation. It has won multiple awards for its unique offer of programmes, treatments and activities based on the Dolder Grand Life Balance philosophy. Guests can immerse themselves in the inspiring world, with a large swimming pool, the sunaburo in the Japanese tradition and the Ladies’ Spa and the Gentlemen’s Spa. Treatments are administered using exclusive La Prairie, Amala and Margy’s products, and Medical Wellness is offered by specialists from a Swiss network of doctors.
New Technologies and Sustainability
Innovation and technology are key to staying ahead, not just front of house, but also behind the scenes. The Dolder Grand is the first hotel in Switzerland to accept cryptocurrency as a payment option, and robots are used in Housekeeping and Food & Beverage departments, for example, to transport food orders along the long corridors. “This means more time for employees to pay even more attention to taking care of guests, so they can offer them a perfect stay,” says Markus Granelli, General Manager of the Dolder Grand.
The Dolder Grand is a pioneer in sustainability. “In everything we do, we strive to offer the best. And always in the spirit of sustainability. Whether it’s in the kitchen, the Spa, the Dolder Sports area or anywhere else: for us, sustainability takes centre stage. We create long-term solutions for social, environmental and economic factors that go beyond mere compliance, but pave the way for innovation around sustainability in the industry as a whole,” Granelli adds. The Dolder Grand underscores its commitment as a member of Responsible Hotels of Switzerland, Swisstainable Leading and Sustainability Leaders.
The Dolder Grand’s extraordinary hospitality, awe-inspiring accommodation and facilities, exquisite culinary offerings and discretion make it a destination for those seeking the ultimate luxury escape. The celebrated City Resort stands for consistency in excellence and innovation – now and in the future.
